Despite widespread knowledge of the dangers of drunk driving and campaign to end drunk driving, DUI accidents still occur at an alarming rate. Drivers who cause DUI accidents with injuries and fatalities may face consequences both in the civil and criminal justice system. This includes criminal felony charges such as manslaughter, which may lead to prison time depending on the driver's prior offenses. Additionally, they may be held responsible civilly, such as through a wrongful death or other personal injury action. In these situations, they would be required to pay civil damages for the harm caused. This may include lost wages and emotional distress.
