As the investigation into the meningitis outbreak continues, new claims emerge concerning just what the company at the center of the contamination knew and when. According to new reports, the New England Compounding Center (NECC) knew it had extensive contamination by mold and bacteria throughout its operations but failed to take corrective action, a federal report says.
Tests conducted from January through September revealed contamination throughout the facility, in some cases with surfaces overgrown with mold. Further, after federal health inspectors visited the pharmacy, they found "greenish black foreign matter" growing in dozens of vials of supposedly sterile drugs linked to a deadly outbreak of fungal meningitis at a Massachusetts pharmacy, plus evidence of bacteria and mold throughout the site, newly released documents show. When officials later tested 50 of those vials, they found that all 50 were contaminated.
In more than half the cases, the company's own testing showed bacteria and mold above its "action" limits, but there is no evidence that it took action, according to a report issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Patients across the country continue to develop meningitis as the result of the tainted steroid shots, with recent statistics showing 344 cases of infection in 18 states, along with 25 deaths.
